Ogni anno la Horror Writer's Association, associazione americana degli scrittori horror, assegna i Bram Stoker Awards ai migliori risultati conseguiti nel genere narrativo, nel nome dell’autore di Dracula, romanzo del 1897 capostipite del moderno horror.

I premi, che costituiscono l’equivalente dei Nebula per la fantascienza, furono presentati per la prima volta nel 1988. Il riconoscimento viene attribuito a opere, pubblicate nel corso dell’anno precedente, segnalate dai membri stessi dell’associazione: due turni di voto a selezione dei finalisti e infine dei vincitori.

Il premio in sé è rappresentato dalla riproduzione di una ideale casa stregata, alta una ventina di centimetri, opera dello scultore Steven Kirk. La porta della spettrale casetta si apre, rivelando una targhetta in ottone con incisi il titolo dell’opera e il nome dell’autore premiato.

La premiazione avrà luogo il 25 giugno prossimo a Burbank, in California, durante la cena di gala in occasione del congresso annuale della Horror Writer's Association.

La HWA ha preannunciato che il premio annuale alla carriera verrà assegnato quest’anno a Michael Moorcock, veterano autore inglese noto in Italia quasi esclusivamente per i sui cicli fantasy, storico esponente della new wave fantascientifica capace di spaziare in tutti i generi del fantastico.

Altro premio annunciato è quello alla Delirium Books per la stampa specializzata, mentre sono state rese note le nominations per le varie categorie, che vedono in lizza nomi noti quali Stephen King e Peter Straub per il miglior romanzo, ancora King con un racconto lungo pubblicato nell’antologia McSweeney's Enchanted Chamber of Astonishing Stories, Clive Barker nelle opere per ragazzi, e Chuck Palahniuk per un racconto breve apparso su Playboy.
